A man and a woman have been arrested after a deliberate act of mischief caused significant flooding at the Winnipeg police headquarters on Saturday night, leading to the building's closure to the public. The incident began when two individuals opened emergency water supply valves in the upper stairwells of the tower building, resulting in a rapid influx of water into the pipes and subsequent flooding. The situation was reported to CBC News at 7:30 p.m., with water pouring from the ceiling of the main foyer and pooling around broken light fixtures near the elevators by 8:30 p.m. Firefighters were called to secure the compromised valves, and the suspects were identified and arrested shortly after 11 p.m. in the 200 block of Graham Avenue. The 51-year-old man and 36-year-old woman are facing charges of mischief over $5,000, and their release was granted on an undertaking. The police station's duty office at 245 Smith St. will remain closed for in-person reporting on Sunday, but regular operations will resume. The cause of the flood is under investigation, and the damage caused is being assessed, with some working spaces affected and much of the office tower, acquired by the city in 2009, being vacant.
