Saltburn Residents Speak Out: The Battle for Beachfront Railings (2026)

Frustration Over the Deteriorating Condition of Saltburn's Promenade Railings

Residents are expressing significant frustration regarding the state of the railings along their beloved beachfront, which have been in need of repair for an extended period.

Craig Hornby, a local resident from Saltburn, voiced his concerns, stating that the maintenance work is "long overdue," and there has been no indication that repairs will commence on the west side of the lower promenade any time soon.

Councillor Philip Thomson explained that the funds allocated for refurbishment have already been exhausted after being used to upgrade the railings between the pier and Hazel Grove. Meanwhile, a spokesperson for Redcar and Cleveland Council noted that one section had suffered damage due to a vehicle collision, but they are in the process of planning permanent repairs.

Hornby emphasized, "Ultimately, Saltburn is often referred to as the jewel in the crown of Redcar and Cleveland. If we can’t manage to fix these railings, it indicates we have much bigger issues to address." He pointed out that while there have been improvements made to the upper promenade in recent years, a significant portion of the lower promenade remains in disrepair.

"I assume it’s part of an ongoing process," he added. "Currently, it’s the low season, which would be an ideal time for repairs, yet it appears that nothing is happening at all."

Councillor Thomson further elaborated that Redcar and Cleveland Council did receive some funding support from the Tees Valley Combined Authority. "The refurbishment efforts commenced at Hazel Grove and have reached the pier, but unfortunately, the budget has run out," he remarked. "The railings extending from the west side of the pier to the Ship Inn are just as neglected as they were before."

He committed to continuing his efforts to secure funding for the repair of these overlooked railings.

The council spokesperson reassured residents, stating, "While the current state of the railings may not be visually appealing, we have ensured safety in the area by installing temporary additional railings. Plans are underway for permanent repairs to the railings. Last year, we successfully completed broader improvement projects along the Lower Promenade."
