The documentary is based on the book of the same name, which was released last August and features interviews with influential artists. These artists share their stories of trying to break into the mainstream and provide a glimpse into the city's vibrant music history. The film also includes unearthed footage, photos, and recordings of live performances, offering a comprehensive look at the era.
One of the key figures in the documentary is Chris Natalini, the lead vocalist for Blood Feast. Natalini's band, formed in Bayonne, New Jersey, in 1985, disbanded in 1991 but reunited years later. Natalini's perspective highlights the intense musical energy of Philadelphia during that period, stating, 'If I was going to make it somewhere, I was going to make it here in Philly. Because at the time, Philly was such a hotbed of music ... and then it's just gone in an instant.'
The documentary also features a theme song written by Michaels, which brings together several of the artists highlighted in the film, including Reggie Wu and Jaron Gulino from Heavens Edge and Frankie Cross and Mad T from Corners of Sanctuary. This collaborative effort adds a layer of unity and celebration to the project.
Michaels and co-author Antonio Aloia spent two years compiling stories from members of bands like Roughhouse, Britny Fox, and Heavens Edge to trace the evolution of disco, hard rock, and grunge music in and around Philadelphia. Their goal was to fill a gap in the city's music history and highlight the contributions of these artists to the broader rock 'n' roll landscape.
"When We Rocked" is not just a documentary but a celebration of Philadelphia's musical legacy.
