The Power of Routine: Michael Busch's Journey to the Top
In the world of baseball, where emotions run high and the pressure is intense, one player has found his secret weapon: routine. Michael Busch, the Chicago Cubs' first baseman, is a testament to the idea that consistency and preparation can lead to remarkable success.
Busch's journey began with a valuable lesson from his former coach, Mike Fox. "The routine works," Busch emphasizes. This simple yet powerful mantra guided him through his breakthrough MLB playoffs, where he dominated with four home runs and an impressive slash line.
But here's where it gets controversial... Busch's success hasn't gone unnoticed, but he remains somewhat under the radar. At 28, he's an integral part of the Cubs' lineup, yet his name might not ring as loudly as some of his teammates. However, his value is undeniable as he embarks on his third full season in the majors.
"It's easy to blend in, but I'm not focused on that," Busch shares. "Our lineup this year is stacked, and I believe we'll perform just as well, if not better, than last season."
And this is the part most people miss... Busch isn't content with resting on his laurels. In the off-season, he experimented with his batting stance, aiming to improve his plate coverage. He's also tackling a new challenge: facing left-handed pitchers.
To prepare, Busch has utilized innovative tools like the Trajekt Arc machine, which simulates the trajectory of a baseball from a left-handed pitcher's perspective. "It's about putting yourself in uncomfortable situations," Busch explains. "By replicating game scenarios, you challenge yourself and grow as a hitter."
Busch's dedication extends to working closely with hitting coaches, fine-tuning his mechanics and approach. "I've always had a good understanding of my zone, and my chase and swing numbers are comparable to righties. I'm not looking to change much, just find that extra edge against lefties."
Alex Bregman, witnessing Busch's numbers flash on the scoreboard, couldn't help but be impressed. Busch's 34 home runs and .866 OPS in 2025, despite limited plate appearances, speak to his talent. With manager Craig Counsell planning regular playing time against lefties, Busch's plate appearances are set to increase.
Counsell believes in Busch's ability to rise to the challenge. "It's an impressive year, and now it's time to prove it," he says.
